Dr. Shaik got his Bachelors in Chemical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani (Rajasthan, India) in 1997. After that he worked for one year in a petrochemical plant of Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL). Then he did his Masters in Chemical Engineering from BITS, Pilani in 2000. He did Ph.D. from Department of Chemical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay (India) in 2005. He worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Princeton University (USA) during Feb 2005 to May 2007, before joining IIT Delhi where he served as Assistant Professor (June 2007 to Dec 2012), and Associate Professor (Dec 2012 - Aug 2019). He was on sabbatical leave during Jul 2017 - Jul 2018 at Petroleum Institute, Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi (UAE). Currently, he is serving as Associate Professor at UAE University (Al Ain, UAE) since Aug 2019.
Dr. Munawar Shaik has about 20+ years of experience in modeling and optimization. His research interests are in the broad area of Process Systems Engineering: Process Operations, Planning and Scheduling of Batch and Continuous Processes, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Modeling and Optimization, Process Synthesis, Heat and Water Networks, Energy Technologies, and Evolutionary Computation.
He has developed novel mathematical programming models for solving several problems in process systems engineering including: planning and scheduling of batch and continuous operations, process design, heat and water networks, superstructure optimization, and evolutionary computation, thus improving the resource utilization of several manufacturing processes including refineries, petrochemicals, pulp and paper, polymers, pipeless plants, biopharmaceuticals, and other fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) plants. He has worked on several industrial sponsored research and consultancy projects in these areas, and secured grants from different external funding agencies.
Dr Shaik has supervised 7 PhDs, 29 M.Tech, and 24 B.Tech students theses at IIT Delhi, and 1 Post-doc at UAE University.
Dr. Shaik received national level ISCA Young Scientist award in 2008-09 (below 32 years category) from Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA). He was awarded national level IEI Young Engineer Award in 2011-12 (below 35 years category) from Institution of Engineers (India). He was recipient of Kusuma Outstanding Young Faculty Fellowship (below 35 years category) in engineering area sponsored by Kusuma Trust at IIT Delhi during 2008-2013.
Dr. Shaik has about 17+ years of teaching experience (12 years at IIT Delhi, 2 years at BITS Pilani, and 3+ years at UAE Univ.), and has been teaching both undergrad and graduate level courses, covering Process Control, Instrumentation & Automation, Process Optimization, Process Engineering, Process Operations Scheduling, Adv. Process. Dynamic Modeling & Control, Renewable Energy Sources, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Mass Transfer Operations, Adv. Modeling & Maths, and Natural Gas Processing.
