Abstract

Buffer allocation has been very important to design an efficient manufacturing system. An optimum buffer allocation helps to reduce idle time for machine tools, thus improves overall throughput for the system. In this work, an optimization model aiming at improving throughput for a serial production Line (SPL) has been introduced. This model primarily comprises of three basic steps: developing an initial solution, predicting buffer sizes for different machine tools and finally optimizing the overall system using metaheuristic approach. The proposed methodology commences with determining a set of buffer sizes and respective throughput using ARENA® software. This will generate a set of initial solution for further, predicting buffer sizes and their throughputs using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Then, Genetic Algorithm (GA) will be applied to optimize the buffer sizes of different machine tools to achieve efficient manufacturing system. The output solutions from previous stage would be used as input to this final step of GA implementation.
