Abstract
This chapter considers the calibration of channels 1 and 2 of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR), a crucial process for the quantitative interpretation of remotely sensed data acquired through time. In this chapter, a new method of absolute calibration of the first two AVHRR channels based on observation of oceans and deep thick clouds is presented, along with sensitivity tests on the possible error sources. Calibration results obtained by this method for NOAA-7, -9 and -11 from 1981 to the present are also included, as is a comparison of the derived NOAA-9 values with other recently published ones. -Authors
