Abstract

Green building concept has been adopted by many nations as the best way forward in preserving our resources and sustaining our environment. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the first countries in the Middle East to adopt such an initiative and apply it to the construction industry. This paper serves as a basis to the construction industry in general and the UAE in particular to outline the roles of different engineering disciplines by which an existing building could be transformed to green. Particularly this paper is concerned with the roles of civil engineers in creating and implementing a model by which the rating of a particular building could be raised. The model concentrates on civil engineering aspects of the building such as calculating the extra structural loads, and introducing additional environmental friendly systems within the building. This model is then applied to an existing building in the UAE to study the applicability of the suggested model and the degree to which it could raise the rating of the selected building. Two of these alternatives have been implemented through the design of two green buildings' components for an existing building. A green roof system and a gray water treatment system have been designed by the authors and currently are under implantation. This paper presents the basics of green buildings implementation and serves as a benchmark for the UAE construction industry in their quest for green building models.
