Abstract

This book chapter presents a detailed overview of automotive coolants. One of the significant objectives of researchers is to reduce fuel consumption and enhance engine performance. Automotive technology improvements have led to increased thermal loads, and higher cooling rates are required. Automotive coolants perform an essential part in maintaining the operating temperature of radiators. Automotive cooling systems pay attention to the additional heat generated when the engine is running. Water and ethylene glycol has been widely investigated as conventional coolants for many years. Features of advanced cooling systems are presented. Numerical and experimental studies have been reviewed to analyze the performance of automotive coolants. Nanocoolants emerged as promising coolants in automotive industry. The advancements of nanotechnology as automotive coolants are also presented. Furthermore, challenges and future work suggest developing novel heat transfer fluids for remarkable performance.
