Abstract

In this research work, a technique for the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams is investigated. This technique utilizes a combination of the mechanically fastened (MF) and at the same time externally bonded (EB) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) systems. It also features the use of nylon anchors to be inserted inside the concrete prior to installing the fasteners. The external bonding is achieved by injecting the predrilled holes with epoxy that is also applied around the holes and is squeezed in between the concrete and FRP. The hybrid EB/MF-FRP strengthened specimens showed higher load capacity and post-cracking stiffness than those of the corresponding MF-FRP counterparts. Extending the FRP strips for the entire beam span is necessary for achieving noticeable enhancement of the load capacity and stiffness with this hybrid EB/MF-FRP system. Using epoxy injection improved the attachment of the FRP and concrete and indeed could be used to protect the fasteners against corrosion and theft.
