Abstract
Collars are cervical zone orthesis and they are used for immobilization of bones, relaxation of muscle, prevention of deformities and compression of nerves. Immobilization is very important in traumas of the cervical zone, because of the functional importance of the anatomic region. The collar does limit cervical spine motion and reduce the forces of compression, but it does not completely prevent flexion/extension, rotation, or lateral bending. There are many types (soft collars, Philadelphia, rigid collars etc.) and sizes of cervical collars. There are many rules for the application of cervical collars to patients who are on ground or sitting. Health personel, especially working in prehospital care and emergency department, must obey these rules in order to make good use of it. In recent years, cervical collars have an important place in first aid interventions, also.
