Cognition and intelligence in HFA

Abstract

The term high functioning captures the level of adequate cognitive functioning in that group, while often, when referring to the level of language competence (i.e., intact structural language), they are described as highly verbal. However, problems with pragmatic language have been consistently reported across the autistic spectrum, even when structural language is intact. In addition, some studies have found evidence of weaknesses in the figurative and idiomatic language domains, contrasting with clear strengths in areas of grammar.
