Abstract
The primary purpose of this study was to compare conventional and organic hazelnut farmers regarding socioeconomic characteristics and the different cultural practices they apply on their hazelnut orchards. Two stratified samples of 56 conventional and 42 organic hazelnut producing farmers from Terme district of Samsun province were the participants of this study. Information was provided by administering a questionnaire filled out during the face-to-face interviews conducted with each farmer. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests of independence were used to analyze data. Results of this study showed that organic hazelnut farmers are more conscious about some cultural practices such as conducting soil testing and applying lime treatments. Conventional farmers, on the other hand, are more careful in applying terracing in sloppy areas and applying a general field cleaning before harvest. Organic farmers demand more extension service which they can easily access from Organic Hazelnut Farmers’ Union.
