Abstract
It has been reported in an earlier publication that Al-Zn coatings offer excellent sacrificial corrosion protection with respect to steel when compared with Al coatings. In this paper, other coating properties that may affect the corrosion resistance of both coatings are compared. Zn coatings produced at different coating conditions are examined by means of S. E. M. Temperature of the substrates during ion plating are measured and the microstructures are compared with the Movchan & Demchishin structure model. Microhardness measurements across thick Al, Al-1. 8% Zn and Al-2. 5% Zn coatings are carried out and the relationship between zinc content in the coating and its microhardness is concluded.
