    Abstract

A discussion on the background and research methodology for a proposed study of the potential for implementing the concepts of extensive cleaner production (CP) and industrial ecology (IE) systems to small and medium industries (SMI) in the UAE covers several environmental impacts faced by UAE based on several studies and analysis, i.e., water resources, air, water and waste management, urban environment, and marine, land and biodiversity resources degradation; industry and environment in the UAE; literature reviews, including a case study of industrial ecosystem in the community of Kalundborg wherein Asnaes diverted its process steam to the Statoil refinery as a source of energy in the 1980s while extracting waste heat from the steam and funneling it through the community's district heating system; concepts of industrial ecology and cleaner production; relationship between cleaner production and sustainable development; relationship between industrial ecology and sustainable development; and research methodology, adopting a four stage approach to the research question.
