Abstract

Mathematical modeling for the simultaneous absorption of CO2 and H2S using MEA in hollow fiber membrane contactors [J. Membr. Sci. 342 (2009) 269–278] The model for ion transport developed in this paper treated each ion as a separate diffusing species, which ignores the coupling in transport rates required to ensure electroneutrality in the liquid phase. The model calculations were performed with [Formula presented] and with [Formula presented]. The small difference in the diffusion coefficient of HS compared to that of MEA+ and MEACOO resulted in an excess of positive charge near the exit of the hollow fiber membrane reactor. The corrected version of Fig. 12, developed by solving the diffusion equations for MEA+ and MEACOO and imposing the condition of local electroneutrality to evaluate the concentration of HS, is shown below. The small change in the ion profiles had minimal effect on the concentrations of the non-ionic species, and did not have any effect on the overall removal of CO2 and H2S in the hollow fiber membrane contactor, which was the main objective of the paper. The same error was made in the analysis of ion transport in our paper: H2S absorption via carbonate solution in membrane contactors: Effect of species concentrations [J. Membr. Sci. 350 (2010) 200–210] The authors would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and they would also like to thank Ali Farzaneh, Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, for bringing these errors to our attention.
