Abstract

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has been successfully running since 2007 and provides quantitative and qualitative coverage of different fields of Civil Engineering. Following a recent detailed review of the MSCE Program, the curriculum was carefully evaluated and revised to enhance the students' capabilities in the field of Civil Engineering. The aim of this paper is to briefly discuss the changes implemented in the MSCE curriculum based on this review. The main changes included removing common core and elective courses, changing other core courses to elective courses, and offering a compulsory course that includes a practical or research component for non-thesis option students. These changes enriched the MSCE Program and helped students to take more elective courses in their field of interest. A comprehensive benchmarking of the revised curriculum confirmed that it compares well with parallel curricula in several well recognized international universities. The learning model and process for curriculum development of the MSCE Program can be adopted by other educational institutions aiming to meet the society's needs for qualified Civil Engineering professionals.
