Abstract

The regular research paper discusses a successful working prototype of a menu system that was built so that disabled people who cannot afford a computer and have difficulty communicating could operate a telephone to select breakfast items in English or Arabic. The motivation of the project was to create a system that would help people of various languages and disabilities to communicate easily as well as reduces the spread of sickness due to paper menus going room to room with an attendant. The telephone number that the person calls speaks in either language and the results of pushing buttons in response to questions are saved on a secure website. The system can handle a couple thousand calls per hour and the results can be downloaded in an Excel spreadsheet. Callers are identified by phone number.
