Abstract
The specific rates of the solvated electron reactions with phenanthrene and 1,12-benzperylene in 1-alkanol mixtures have been measured. One set of measurements was obtained in methanol-decanol mixtures of varying viscosities and another set of data was obtained in a series of isoviscous binary mixtures of C8, C9, and C10 with lower alkanols. In the isoviscous mixtures, the rate was found to be independent of the particular 1-alkanol in the mixture. These data are compared with predicted values based on the Stokes-Einstein modification of the Smoluchowski equation adapted to binary systems.
