Abstract
In this paper, the impact of cell loss on the quality of service for MPEG video in ATM environment is investigated. It has been found that the consequence of the loss of video sequence header on picture quality can be tolerated even at a high cell loss ratio of 10-3. The loss of GOP and picture headers results in a picture loss ratio which is only slightly higher than the cell loss ratio due to the short lengths of those headers. The combined effect of GOP & picture header loss and slice loss, however, produces an errored picture ratio which renders the picture quality not easily accepted by the viewers, even if the cell loss ratio is maintained at a low level of 10-6. Thus, forward error correction schemes may be needed in the AAL to improve the picture quality expressed in terms of errored picture ratios.
