Abstract
Research interest has been growing in the phenomenon of workplace envy for the last two decades. Envy is a painful emotion experienced when “one lacks and desires others’ superior qualities, achievements, and possessions” (Duffy et al. 2012, p. 643). Experience of envy at work can vary in intensity and frequency and may lead to different types of behavioral and attitudinal consequences. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of workplace envy literature. We first offer an analysis of conceptual and operationalization challenges faced by existing research and methodologies employed to study this construct. Next, we synthesize the outcomes of envy and mechanisms proposed to link envy with outcomes. Finally, we summarize the less researched area of antecedents of envy and elaborate on future research directions and practical implications based on the comprehensively reviewed literature.
