N2 - The effect of external heating on the effectiveness of microchannel heat exchangers is experimentally studied in this paper. Two stream symmetric, indirect-contact counterflow microchannel heat exchangers were fabricated that provided a range of NTU values from 0.35 to 1.44. Results are presented as a plot between two nondimensional terms (effectiveness and NTU), there by generalizing the results for application to any coolant and microchannel heat exchangers. The heat exchangers were tested for balanced flow condition by supplying external heating at rates of 0%, 15% and 25% with respect to the maximum heat transfer rate thermodynamically possible between the two fluid streams. The heat exchanger effectiveness was reduced by 11-16% and 16-27% by the applied 15% and 25% external heating rates, respectively.
