Abstract

This paper experimentally investigated a fault location algorithm based on upgrading distribution substation smart meters with synchrophasor capability. The developed time-synchronized measurements can be used to upgrade distribution substation relays functions and to define fault location based on data exchange with primary substations. The upgraded smart meter results are tested and compared with other IEC 61850 based intelligent electronic devices.
