Abstract
The design activity usually commences with some form of design intent, outlining a need to be met, and which can be represented as design briefs or objectives, including customers' requirements (which may be vague). In practice, this first step of analyzing the design problem and the preliminary requirements, is usually performed ad hoc, resulting in incomplete design specifications. A major preliminary aspect in the first stage of Design Function Deployment (DFD), is the establishment of requirements, design specifications and constraints. This paper, thus focusses on the various activities involved in the first stage of DFD, involving the elicitation, refinement and categorization of requirements, preparation of the quality plan, determination of the necessary relative importance ratings and then translation of the requirements into measurable design specifications.
