Abstract
This chapter explores the evolution, advantages, and challenges of pervious concrete, a highly permeable construction material designed to address environmental and infrastructural issues associated with conventional impervious surfaces. Pervious concrete offers benefits such as effective stormwater management, reduced carbon footprint through the use of waste components, and commendable durability, contributing to sustainable construction practices. Despite its advantages, challenges include potential environmental impacts, lower compressive strength, and maintenance requirements. The integration of pervious concrete into stormwater management systems necessitates careful consideration of design factors, including aggregate choice, cementitious materials, compaction techniques, and construction practices. Additionally, the chapter introduces the objectives of this book, including providing insights into its properties, hydrological design, water quality, environmental benefits, upscaling, and potential challenges. Indeed, the book aims to be a valuable reference for interdisciplinary collaboration and the advancement of research in sustainable construction and stormwater management.
