Abstract

Dubai is known for its global identity, the warm reception of the expatriate population, and the integration of their everyday lives into the city’s character. This study focuses on the Indian expatriate population living in Dubai, their place attachment, and the notion of place identity. The study adopts a qualitative approach; a photographic exploration of the city is used to capture the place identity reflections of the city on Indian expatriates, and vice versa. The objective was to decipher how an individual’s place attachment manifests to contribute to the formation of place identity. As this dynamic behaviour continues to evolve, it is observed on both local and global scales. Exploration of the connection between people, place attachment, and place identity has revealed segments related to spatial behaviour (how Indian expatriates interact spatially in the city) and spatial scales (neighbourhood, residential area, or city where Indian expatriates engage). Further investigation of these segments can provide deeper insights into the interplay and expression of the dynamics of place identity, place attachment, and people at the local and global levels.
