Abstract
Routing protocol for low power and lossy network (RPL) has been particularly designed to ensure effective communication between constrained devices that are characterized by their limited power and memory. This routing protocol may be affected by several environmental constraints such as heterogeneity, mobility, and untrustworthiness. These constraints may have positive or negative effects on RPL performances and services. To demonstrate the effects of the environmental constraints, this paper provides an assessment of the node's behavior using RPL protocol and running over low power and lossy networks. this study aims to extrapolate the main network metrics that are highly affected by the environmental change and which environment causes a high loss. The main findings of this study are that the heterogeneous environment negatively affects most of the network metrics. However, the untrustworthy environment increases the energy consumption while more packets are lost in the mobile environment by up to 92%.
