The intention of this article is to explain and demonstrate the application of grounded theory in the study of social representations. The structural posture is considered appropriate for this study, since it is through use of the figurative nucleus that this theory can be integrated with the grounded theory. The paper presents an empirical example of the use and application of grounded theory in analyzing social representations of the teacher's counseling role among education students. Finally, the study presents some conclusions as well as limitations in applying grounded theory to the study of social representations.
