Abstract
The idea that stressful life events can contribute to the initiation and development of substance use disorders gained some acceptance particularly in the clinical community. Research studies of life events and their relationship to addiction disorders are reviewed. Adverse life events will be divided into predisposing or vulnerable life events, precipitating or triggers, and mediator factors. Findings from studies are summarised and their relevance to the methodology discussed.
