Abstract

The mass balance equation (Richards' equation) is solved for the flow in unsaturated zone for a dam site at the United Arab Emirates. An iteration scheme is developed to solve the discrete implicit finite difference approximation equations. A long column was built to determine the moisture water content and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity for Shawab dam site and used as an input of the numerical model. The scheme showed good agreement with other numerical models. Finally, the wetting front movement is determined experimentally and compared with numerical model. It is concluded that the numerical model has adequately represented the flow behavior in the unsaturated zone.
