Numerical solution of transient thermal stresses in a functionally graded cylinder

Abstract

This paper considers the transient thermal stresses in a circular cylinder made of a functionally graded material (FGM). The cylinder material is considered to be graded along the radial direction, where an exponentially varying distribution is assumed. The material is assumed to be isotropic with constant Poisson's ratio. The cylinder is subjected to a constant temperature at the surface. A numerical method based on implicit finite difference scheme is used to calculate the temperature, radial displacement and stress distributions within the cylinder. The time dependent temperature, radial displacement, radial stress, hoop stress, and axial stress are plotted for a FGM consists of ceramic ZrO2 and alloy Ti-6Al-4V.
