Abstract
The convective heat transfer of a heated rectangular block in a two dimensional channel flow is numerically simulated by the Finite Analytic method. A block of three different lengths is placed in the middle of the channel and maintained at a constant temperature different from the fluid temperature. The channel height, H, is five times that of the block width, W. The flow is considered to be two dimensional, laminar, viscous, and incompressible. The numerical solutions are obtained by using FANS-2D (Finite Analytic Numerical Solutions-2D code) which is a user interactive computer program based on the finite analytic method, to solve the full Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation in primitive variables. The finite analytic numerical solution predicts that the heat transfer and flow past a rectangular block is steady at Reynolds number of 10, and that vortex shedding occurs at Reynolds numbers of 100 and 500. Prandtl numbers used in the present study are 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0. The vortex shedding in the flow past a rectangular block is predicted for three ratios of length/width, namely L/W of 4, 1 and 1/4. The effect of the vortex shedding on the local heat transfer is studied.
