Abstract

This study investigates numerically the impact ofmultipleweb perforations on the local stability of web plates of cellular steel columns. The Finite Element Method is employed to perform a parametric analysis to determine the critical elastic uniaxial stress at which local buckling of the perforated web occurs. The interaction between the flanges and the web is ignored and the web is approximately modeled as a long plate with restrained out-of-plane displacements along its four edges. The effect of the different geometrical parameters of the perforated web on the buckling stress is investigated. These parameters include the plate's length and width, and the perforations' diameter and spacing. The results of the parametric analysis are used to develop a non-dimensional formula that expresses the elastic uniaxial buckling stress of the perforated web plate as a function of the various geometries and perforation configurations.
