Abstract

This paper investigates the channel capacity with respect to pulse waveform of M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) ultra wideband (UWB) communication systems over multiple-access and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on Gaussian approximation for the multiple access interference, an expression of the signal-to-noise ratio is derived for the UWB system using various forms of pulses. In addition to rectangular pulse, 2nd derivative Gaussian, and Rayleigh pulses are considered. The effect of pulse selection on the UWB capacity is investigated in AWGN multiuser channel. The information theoretic capacity of the UWB system is expressed as a function of system parameters. Analytical and simulation results show that the capacity of UWB system is highly influenced by the selected pulse shape.
