Abstract
The possibilities for employing the ER phenomenon in practical applications have long been recognized, eg, in clutches, shock absorbers, motor bearings and hydraulic valves. In this study, the velocity profile of a transparent ER fluid subjected to an electric field in a rectangular conduit is measured. Measurements are obtained optically using laser-Doppler anemometry (LDA) and provide the local flow field of the ER-fluid as a function of an applied electric field. The influence of an applied alternating current at various frequencies as well as the influence of direct current on the flow behavior of the ER-fluid are examined. (from Authors)
