Abstract
In this paper, the design and performance analysis of a forward error protection scheme which uses the two dimensional error coding technique for the AAL to support MPEG video services in ATM networks, are carried out. Our study has shown that the design of the forward error correction (FEC) code for the convergence sublayer (CS) in the AAL must be carefully considered because of the possible adverse effect caused by the additional traffic carrying the redundancy of the FEC code. It has been found in our study that, as long as the cell loss ratio is not higher than 10-4, the adverse effect (measured in terms of increased errored picture ratio) will be more than offset by the improvement made possible by the FEC code.
