Pathway to criminal behaviors: A profile of drug dependent offenders enforced for treatment by a court order

Abstract

Case notes of 68 patients were used. Nearly 81% were male and 19% female. Most of the referrals were from the Probation Service. 65 Offenders (95.6%) had a diagnosis of opiate dependence syndrome and only 3 cases (4.4%) were cocaine dependent. 20.6% of the patients had no previous convictions and the average number of crimes was 4.3%. The average onset of criminal activity was 21%. The amount of heroin misuse was the only predictive factor for being involved in current crimes.
