Abstract

Clustering schemes have been proposed to prolong the life-time of a Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). It is also desired that the energy consumption be evenly dispersed throughout the network. This paper presents RECA: a Ring-structured Energy-efficient Clustering Architecture. In RECA, nodes take turns to be the cluster-head and make local decisions on the fair-share length of their duty cycle according to their remaining energy and those of the rest of the nodes within the same cluster, consequently they deplete their energy supply at approximately the same time regardless of the initial amount of energy in their battery. RECA avoids the tight synchronization problem in LEACH and our primary results show that our scheme can achieve 50%-150% longer network lifetime than LEACH depending on the initial energy level.
