Abstract
The archipelago of Japan is often struck by natural disasters including earthquakes, floods, and eruption of volcanoes, which could be disastrous. In this chapter, we will present a summary of recent earthquakes and volcanic activities which occurred in Kyushu Island, Southwest Japan, in the last decades and examples from geoscientific technologies used in studying these natural hazards. At the end of the chapter, we will present disaster prevention and mitigation in Japan.
