Abstract
A few decades ago, China was one of the most isolated nations in the world. It is now a major international player and an economic powerhouse. Behind this economic miracle lies perhaps the world's greatest internal human migration in history - the mass exodus of millions of rural farmers to urban areas to take up jobs in factories and the service sector. This article discusses the migration flow, the push and pull factors behind it, and the changes taking place in rural villages, cities and Chinese society. It is particularly relevant to the study of population movement and development.
