Abstract

In recent years, the field of networking has been marked by the emergence of a new technology that seems poised to revolutionize our infrastructures. Software-Defined Networks (SDN) introduce a novel networking paradigm characterized by a distinct architectural philosophy. This evolution in network infrastructure streamlines equipment and fosters independence among devices. Rather than denoting a specific solution or product, SDN encompasses a collection of innovative technologies designed to facilitate centralized management of network resources, enhance programmability and orchestration, and enable virtualization. SDN has emerged as a critical technology for overseeing large-scale networks, including vehicular networks. Its foundation lies in the physical separation of the control plane from the data plane, allowing for logically centralized control and intelligence through a software controller. Recently, several studies have shown that integrating the SDN paradigm into Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) provides flexibility, programmability, and better scalability support. This paper presents a thorough review of security issues for SDN-based vehicular VANETs, offering a detailed analysis of architectural considerations and security services across different network layers, while also highlighting emerging research challenges for future investigation.
