N2 - In this paper a strategy is proposed to formulate the problem of sensor location for diagnosis in structured systems, as an optimization problem. This work tends to answer two questions: is the Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) problem solvable for an existing sensor network? If not, what are the additional sensors to be implemented or what is the sensor network to be used to ensure the FDI problem solvability? This problem is studied in the absence and the presence of external disturbances. Simple examples are considered in order to explain the proposed strategy.
