Abstract
This paper focuses on the power depletion due to stimulated Raman scattering in a WDM link when bursty IP traffic is directly loaded. The actual power penalty due to stimulated Raman scattering is shown to be dependent on IP traffic load. The statistics of the power depletion due to stimulated Raman scattering under various traffic loading conditions are obtained and compared with the stimulated Raman scattering effect under the worst-case assumption. This provides useful information for the network designers to adjust the power of input light accordingly so that significant improvement in the performance of IP over WDM can be achieved.
