The western influence on traditional Arab cities: With particular reference to Dubai, UAE

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

The affect of western planning ideologies on the fast urban development of Arab cities, which is accelerated by great economic strength was discussed. Large-scale projects were imported and implemented without taking into consideration the cultural context. It was suggested that architects and planners would have to play an important role in the establishment of a new cultural and environmental synthesis. It was also suggested that an insight into possible incompatibilites with their own cultural system, and the potential of western technologies with regard to possible conversion and adaptation should be developed by the architects and town planners.
