Understanding Privacy and Information Security in the Middle East with a Focus on Social Media

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

The study aims to highlight the intricate relationships between private information, boundaries, ease of use, interdependence, and social-media concerns among Emiratis. Additionally, it aims to shed light on individual behaviors and perceptions within social-media environments. Using privacy management theory, an online questionnaire was administered to a random sample of 300 respondents. Instagram is the most preferred social-media app among Emiratis, while Facebook is the least preferred. The sample demonstrated a thorough comprehension of the privacy and information security concepts on social media. The research revealed that Emiratis surrounded themselves with “thick boundaries,” limited the information they published on social media, and rejected any friend requests from strangers.
