Abstract

Unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) are extremely versatile in terms of their properties and applications and have been a popular thermoset used as polymer matrices in composites. The interest in UPR composites has been increasing continuously over the past decade owing to their applications in a broad range of technological fields such as naval construction, marine and land transportation industries, waterlines, and building construction. In this chapter, an overview is given of recent developments in polyester-based microcomposites. Filler types and composite properties and applications are reviewed. In addition, the latest methods used to enhance the behavior of UPR composites such as fiber treatments, coupling agents, and hybridization are discussed. Finally, a comparison between different types of UPR-filler composites developed as insulating materials using waste rubber particles, date palm leaf fibers, date pits, and red shale as fillers is given.
